Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu
Kathmandu
The group will rendezvous at our hotel in Kathmandu. Transfers from Kathmandu Airport are provided. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to do some independent exploration in this colorful and bustling city. Alternatively, you may prefer to recover from your journey by relaxing in the hotel gardens or beside the pool. You will share dinner with your guide, who will offer an informal briefing about the upcoming days.
Day 2: Fly to Lukla - Trek to Phakding
Lukla - Thame Valley
After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the domestic terminal of Kathmandu Airport (or transferred to Ramechhap), where you check in for a short flight to Lukla. Landing on the narrow, sloping runway in the heart of the mountains is a very spectacular way to reach the Khumbu. Following your arrival at MLN-Lukla, you will have breakfast before meeting our trekking crew and embarking on the initial stage of the trek. The short and very pleasant afternoon’s walk leads you down to the river through the pastoral lands of the Sherpas, many of whom now make their living from trekking. There are many tea houses and basic lodges where it’s possible to stop for a drink or a chat. You will also see many stones intricately carved with prayers in the evocative Tibetan script and prayer wheels of all sizes. Everywhere in the valley colorful strings of prayer flags flutter from high points and bridges. Your overnight stay will be at MLN Phakding.
Day 3: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,500m)
Thame Valley - Namche Bazaar
Follow the riverside trail through pine forests, with a short climb out of a narrow gorge. You’ll reach the Khumbu National Park entrance where permits are recorded, then continue through a wooded valley on a well-made path, crossing suspension bridges along the way.
At the river confluence, one stream arrives from Thame and the other from the main Khumbu Valley. After a spectacular bridge crossing, the final push begins, a long switchback climb that is the toughest part of the day. Arrive in Namche and settle into MLN Namche.
Distance: 13 km | Trek: 6–7 hrs
Day 4: Namche Excursion Day
Namche
Namche Bazaar sits between ridges beneath giant Khumbu peaks and remains an important market town, with trade historically linked to Tibet. Today is for exploring and acclimatizing.
Start with a hike to Sagarmatha. Next in Syangboche, about 1.5 hours from Namche, where mountain waste is transformed into art and design while supporting local solutions for solid waste management. If you still have energy, continue on a gentle hike to Khumjung village, home of the Sir Edmund Hillary School (3,750m) built in 1961. Inside, you’ll see old artifacts, photos, and films that tell the story of this region’s first school.
Return to Namche for lunch, then enjoy a relaxed afternoon. In the evening, explore the bazaar, visit the beautiful 80-year-old monastery with Thanka paintings, and enjoy Namche’s unique mix of bakeries, coffee spots, pubs, and shops.
Day 5: Trek to Thamo (3,480m)
Namche - Thamo
After a calm breakfast, set off on a quiet 3-hour walk through spruce, pine, and juniper forests to reach Thamo, a peaceful village away from the busier trails. This route follows an old trading path toward Tibet via Nangpa La, beneath the presence of Cho Oyu (8,012m), and you’ll likely meet very few other trekkers.
Thamo is also the hometown of Ang Rita Sherpa, famous for summiting Everest 10 times without supplemental oxygen. After lunch at the lodge, the afternoon is yours to relax and take in views of Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru.
Distance: 5 km | Trek: 3 hrs |
Day 6: Acclimatization Day in Thamo
Thamo
Above Thamo is a quiet cluster of important Buddhist sites. Today’s walk leads gently uphill to Chharok Monastery, Gendukpa Monastery, and Lawudo Gompa, places known for retreat and spiritual practice.
Very few trekkers come this way, so the day feels personal and peaceful. Spend time in the calm surroundings before returning to Thamo for another comfortable night.
Distance: 10 km | Trek: 6–7 hrs |
Day 7: Trek to Kongde (4,250m)
Thamo - Kongde
With strong acclimatization behind you, today brings a more demanding trek with big rewards. Begin with a 30-minute descent, then follow the south side of the Bhote Kosi River past the small village of Pare. From there, the trail climbs gradually through rhododendron, pine, and bamboo forest toward Kongde Peak’s glacier.
This route was built to access MLN Kongde and stays quiet, with few trekkers around. The trail is well-made but crosses steep ground, including one short section with safety cables used as handrails. Sherpas are there to assist anyone who wants a steady hand through that part.
Arrive at MLN Kongde for a two-night stay. The lodge sits at 4,250m with sweeping views across the valley toward Namche and beyond, with Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam as the backdrop. Enjoy the lodge’s restaurant and bar as the sun sets on the world’s highest peaks.
Distance: 14 km | Trek: 8–9 hrs
Day 8: Trek to Farak Ri (4,600m)
Kongde - Farak Ri
For Farak Ri, an early start is recommended. The climb to the viewpoint takes around 2 to 3 hours, and the views from the top are unforgettable, stretching across the Khumbu Valley and including four of the world’s six highest peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.
Descend back to Kongde and enjoy lunch on the terrace with a bird’s-eye view of Namche and Khumjung. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax or wander nearby.
Trek: 2–3 hrs
Day 9: Trek to Phakding (2,610m)
Farak Ri - Phakding
Today’s route drops steeply from the high ridgeline above the Dudh Kosi, so trekking poles are highly recommended. Take your time and enjoy stopping in small Sherpa settlements tucked away from the main route, where trekkers are rarely seen.
Eventually, you rejoin the classic Everest trail and continue down to Phakding, returning to the comfort of MLN Phakding for the night.
Distance: 7.5 km | Trek: 5–6 hrs
Day 10: Trek to Lukla (2,840m)
Phakding - Lukla
Start the day at a relaxed pace and complete the final trekking stage back to Lukla. Keep in mind the first day was mostly downhill, so today includes a tough final climb.
The last 40 minutes are steep as you crest the ridge where the Lukla airstrip was built. Check into MLN Lukla for your final night in the Khumbu.
Distance: 4.5 km | Trek: 3 hrs
Day 11: Fly to Kathmandu (1,400m)
Lukla - Kathmandu
Say goodbye to your Sherpa crew and fly back to Kathmandu (or to Ramechhap, followed by a road transfer). The rest of the day is free for sightseeing or shopping through Kathmandu’s streets and bazaars. In the evening, enjoy a celebratory meal and relive the highlights of your Everest journey.
Day 12: Free Day in Kathmandu
Kathmandu
This day is kept as a contingency in case Lukla flights are delayed. If everything runs on time, it becomes a bonus day to explore Kathmandu’s temples, markets, and historic neighborhoods at your own pace.
Day 13: Departure Day
Kathmandu
Transfers to Kathmandu Airport are included. If you would like to extend your Nepal trip, you can pre-book a Kathmandu Valley sightseeing day, or add a multi-day wildlife excursion to Chitwan.
